Getting The Basics Right

It never fails to surprise us how often the fundamentals are overlooked. We see drawings without scale bars, or with scale bars that bear no relation to the drawing itself. Plans labelled as sections. Spelling errors scattered through annotations. References to regulations that were withdrawn years ago. These might seem like small details, but they can quickly erode confidence in the quality of the work.

Every architect, technician and designer knows that mistakes happen – we all make them. But what’s harder to accept is the complete lack of care that often sits behind these errors. The basics are not optional extras; they are the foundation of good practice. A drawing should be clear, accurate and trustworthy. If the basics aren’t right, everything else built on top of them becomes questionable.

It’s easy to underestimate the impact of these small lapses. A missing scale bar can delay coordination meetings. An outdated regulation can trigger costly rework. A mistitled plan can confuse contractors on site and slow progress. What could have been avoided with a quick check ends up wasting valuable time and money.

At Blackrock, we do our utmost to get it right first time. We take pride in accuracy and consistency because they reflect the standards we set for ourselves. Before a drawing leaves the office, it’s reviewed for clarity and checked against current regulations. It’s not about chasing perfection for its own sake – it’s about delivering information that others can rely on without hesitation.

Good drawings don’t just communicate design intent; they communicate professionalism. A clear, well-presented sheet shows care, attention and respect for the people who will use it. The small details – a correct title, a clean layout, a scale bar that actually matches the drawing – speak volumes about the mindset behind the work.

Getting the basics right isn’t exciting. It doesn’t make headlines or win awards. But it builds trust, saves time and sets a standard that defines how we work. At Blackrock, that’s something we’ll always value.
