This loft conversion formed part of a wider residential redevelopment of a dated commercial building in Herne Bay. The project was delivered for a repeat developer client, allowing us to explore the site’s full potential and add real value through design-led thinking.
The original proposal focused on extending and reconfiguring the existing structure to create a series of high-quality, self-contained apartments. During the design development stage, an opportunity was identified to utilise the roof space more effectively. What began as an afterthought quickly became the standout element of the entire scheme.
Unlocking the potential of the roof space
By carefully analysing the existing structure and roof form, we were able to design a generous loft conversion that transformed the previously unused roof void into a stunning penthouse apartment. The design made full use of the pitched roof geometry, incorporating dormer windows to the front elevation to maximise internal space, natural light and views.
This loft conversion resulted in the most desirable unit within the development and significantly enhanced the overall value of the scheme.
Design-led loft conversion
The penthouse apartment was designed around modern, open plan living. A large kitchen, dining and living space sits at the heart of the layout, creating a bright and flexible environment ideal for contemporary lifestyles.
The apartment includes:
- A spacious open plan kitchen and living area
- Two generous double bedrooms
- A well-proportioned bathroom
- Pitched roof ceilings that add character and volume
- Dormer windows providing panoramic views over Herne Bay
The combination of volume, light and outlook created a unique living space that clearly set this apartment apart from the others within the building.
A high-value loft conversion solution
This project demonstrates how a well-considered loft conversion can unlock hidden potential within an existing building. By extending into the roof space, we helped our client achieve:
- Increased floor area without expanding the building footprint
- A premium penthouse apartment within a residential development
- Improved return on investment
- A distinctive, design-led living space
For developers, homeowners and investors alike, loft conversions remain one of the most effective ways to add space, value and architectural interest.
