Modest bungalow loft conversion, Herne Bay
This project involved a small and carefully considered loft conversion to an existing detached bungalow in Herne Bay. The property itself was modest in scale and appearance, with no intention to create a dramatic architectural statement. Instead, the focus was on delivering practical additional accommodation that responded directly to the client’s needs.
The brief was simple – to gain an extra bedroom, introduce some useful storage and include a compact, functional shower room, all while maintaining the character and proportions of the original bungalow.
A practical approach to loft conversion design
The existing roof space offered just enough volume to make a loft conversion viable without overcomplicating the design. The solution was intentionally restrained, allowing the new accommodation to sit comfortably within the existing roof form.
A modest dormer was introduced to provide sufficient head height, natural light and usable floor area, ensuring the new rooms felt comfortable rather than compromised.
Simple internal layout
The loft conversion created a compact but well-planned upper floor, delivering exactly what was required without wasted space.
The new accommodation includes:
- A well-proportioned additional bedroom
- A small storage cupboard integrated into the layout
- A practical shower room designed for everyday use
Careful planning ensured that circulation, head heights and storage were all resolved efficiently, resulting in a space that feels calm and functional.
Respecting the existing bungalow
Externally, the loft conversion was designed to blend naturally with the existing bungalow. The scale, roof detailing and window proportions were kept deliberately understated, allowing the property to retain its original character while quietly benefiting from the added space.
This approach helped ensure a smooth planning process and avoided unnecessary visual impact on the surrounding street.
A cost-effective loft conversion solution
This project is a good example of how even a small loft conversion can make a significant difference to how a home functions. Without extending the footprint of the bungalow, the client gained an additional bedroom and bathroom, improving both usability and long-term value.
At Blackrock Architecture Ltd, we regularly design loft conversions for bungalows where space is limited and budgets are carefully managed. With the right design approach, simple loft conversions like this can deliver practical, high-value results without unnecessary complexity.
