Upside-down living

This bespoke loft conversion was designed for a one-off existing property in Studd Hill, Herne Bay. The primary aim was to transform the upper level of the house into a flexible first floor day room that fully embraced the property’s elevated coastal position and uninterrupted sea views.

Rather than treating the loft as a traditional bedroom-focused space, the brief focused on creating an ‘upside-down’ living arrangement, placing the main living areas at high level to take advantage of light, outlook and connection to the coast.

Designing for upside-down living

The loft conversion reconfigured the first floor to accommodate a generous day room, with a kitchen and dining area naturally integrated into the space. This open plan arrangement allows the occupants to cook, dine and relax while enjoying panoramic views across the sea, creating a strong visual and functional connection to the outdoors.

Large openings and direct access to a balcony further enhance the sense of openness and make the most of the coastal setting.

Cost-effective and practical coastal design

A key consideration for this project was durability and long-term maintenance, particularly given the exposed coastal environment. The design deliberately avoided high-maintenance finishes in favour of robust, practical materials that perform well in salty sea air.

Key design choices included:

  • Galvanised steel guarding to the balcony, offering durability and reduced maintenance compared to glass balustrades
  • Through-colour render with protective additives to resist staining and weathering
  • Simple cement-based cladding with zero ongoing maintenance requirements

These materials ensured the loft conversion remained cost-effective to build and economical to maintain, without compromising on architectural quality.

A practical loft conversion with lasting value

This project demonstrates how a well-designed loft conversion can completely redefine how a home is used. By relocating the primary living spaces to the upper level, the client gained a bright, flexible and view-focused environment that would not have been possible at ground floor.
