Single storey extension, internal alterations and landscaping | Walmer, Deal

Project Description:
Small single storey rear extension with internal alterations, interior refurbishment and external landscaping works at The Old Wardens House, North Barracks, Walmer, Deal, Kent.  The property forms part of the historic North Barracks site, a distinctive setting characterised by its period architecture and traditional materials.  The scheme sought to sensitively enhance the existing building while creating a light, contemporary interior that connects more directly with the garden and outdoor entertaining areas.

Total Gross Internal Area:
Existing 160.69m² / Proposed 174.33m²

Planning Granted:
2022

Procurement Method:
Client-led procurement with individual subcontractors appointed directly, enabling close involvement in the specification and finish of all elements.  Key materials and fittings were sourced independently to maintain control over cost, design quality and authenticity.

Construction Technique:
The new extension was constructed using traditional masonry walls with matching brickwork to complement the existing property, paired with a flat roof concealed behind a parapet wall to achieve a clean, contemporary form that integrates sensitively with the original structure.  The use of aluminium-framed glazed doors and windows allows generous daylight penetration while maintaining a crisp, modern contrast to the original materials.  The landscaping design extends the architectural language outdoors, using high-quality paving, soft planting and integrated seating areas to form a private, sheltered courtyard environment.

Blackrock Architecture Appointment:
Blackrock Architecture were appointed to oversee the design, planning, and technical stages of the project, producing full working drawings and a detailed materials and workmanship specification.  Our role extended into construction support, ensuring that the build quality and finishes met both the design intent and the client’s aspirations.  The practice worked closely with the client to balance the charm of the existing period structure with carefully considered modern interventions that enhance comfort, light and functionality.

Internally, the layout was reconfigured to create an open, sociable kitchen and dining space characterised by high ceilings, rooflights and a strong visual connection to the garden.  The design introduces bespoke blue-painted cabinetry, solid timber worktops and pendant lighting, combining contemporary detailing with natural textures for warmth and character.  The rear seating area features exposed brickwork, steel-framed glazing and terrazzo-style flooring, providing a bright, sunlit space that transitions effortlessly into the landscaped courtyard.

Externally, the landscaping complements the interior aesthetic, with paved terraces, climbing frames and planted borders arranged around a central dining area.  The result is a cohesive flow between inside and out, blurring the boundaries between the historic property and its contemporary additions.  Soft evening lighting enhances the atmosphere, allowing the courtyard to function as an extension of the living space throughout the day and night.

Overall, The Old Wardens House project represents a thoughtful blend of restoration and renewal.  It preserves the architectural integrity of the original building while introducing a fresh, modern aesthetic that celebrates craftsmanship, proportion and light.  The outcome is a beautifully balanced home that combines period character with refined modern living.
